ALDERMEN TO CONSIDER FUND FOR MAURY STATUE

Will Take Up Tomorrow Night Committee’s Recommendation for $5,000 Appropriation.

Among the papers to come before the Board of Aldermen for concurrence Tuesday night will be the resolution recommended by the Finance Committee appropriating $5,000 to the fund for the erection of a monument to Matthew Fontaine Maury. The Maury Association has plans in preparation for the erection of the memorial on Monument Avenue, it is said, on a site to be donated by the city.

The board will also act upon the resolution, of which Alderman White Is patron, directing the City Planning commission to Investigate and report on the practicability of the purchase by the city of certain lots in outlying districts to be reserved for parks and playgrounds when the city extends its limits. Mr. White points out that at this time the city may secure land at small cost. whereas after the city reaches the outlying territory the prices of park and playground sites will be large.

Another matter of some importance is the ordinance authorizing the acceptance of certain land designed as parking space adjacent to Byrd Park to be dedicated by Clarence Cosby, who expects to develop a large section of territory at that point.

MAURY ASSOCIATION WILL HOLD SESSION WEDNESDAY

Members of the Matthew Fontaine Maury Association will hold their annual meeting Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock in Room 630, Jefferson

Hotel. This will be the sixth anniversary of the founding of the organization.

Mrs. E.E. Moffitt, the president, will report, among other matters. the result of her correspondence with officers of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. At its last general convention this organization went upon record in favor of material aid to the Maury Association, in connection with the movement to place a memorial to Virginia’s celebrated scientist upon Monument Avenue.

Mrs. Herbert W. Jackson, treasurer, has received numerous contributions from the schools of the State. While the aggregate is far below what should have been collected  from 500,000 children, she has noted contributions, which deserve special mention.

Gaston Lichtenstein, corresponding secretary. who personally solicited donations from the citizens of Richmond, will read the names of those who have contributed the largest amounts to the monument fund. Last summer, while at Buffalo Lithia Springs, he sent the treasurer a check for nearly $60, the proceeds of a concert the joint effort of interested guests, North Carolinians as well as Virginians.
