Jeff. Davis Ave!

Montgomery honors the name of her people’s dead hero.

The Name of Line Street Changed by the City Council Last Night to Jeff. Davis Avenue – The Name was Given in Repsonse to a Unanimous Petition from Residents and Property Holders.

Jeff Davis Avenue in Montgomery, the Capital city of Alabama, the “cradle of the Confederacy.”

That is the name of the prettiest and pleasantest suburban residence street in the city.

Last night the City Council in response to a unanimous petition from citizens who reside or own property on what was formerly Line street, changed the name of that street to Jeff Davis Avenue. It is a beautiful name for a beautiful street.

The following is the petition as it went to the council last night:

THE PETITION

MONTGOMERY, Ala., Jan. 6, 1890.

To the Honorable City Council of Montgomery:

Gentlemen: We, the undersigned citizens residing or owning property on Line street in the city of Montgomery, respectfully petition your honorable body to change the name of said street to Jeff. Davis Avenue. In support of this petition we beg to urge for your consideration the fact that the name “Line Street,” is no longer appropriate, the corporate line of the city having been extended 500 feet further south; and the further fact that Montgomery, the “Cradle of the Confederacy,” has no street named for the late Jefferson Davis, the chieftain of the “Lost Cause,” whose illustrious name and heroic deeds are inseparably linked with the city’s history.

In this matter we desire to pay humble tribute to the name of the dead great man.

Respectfully submitted
