Reader Remembers Maury Statue Dedication

EDITOR, TIMES-DISPATCH: Larry Hall’s recent article, “Allegorical Maury Statue Was a Monumental Task,” was most enjoyable.

Born in 1924, on the 3200 block of Grove Avenue, I remember the dedication of the

monument. It was within easy walking distance then. Now no one would consider it.

But enough of memory lane. Matthew Fontaine Maury probably had a greater influence on the world than any of the other men commemorated on Monument Avenue. His charting of the seas advanced the ocean transportation of goods between all nations as well as improving the knowledge and skills of our own Navy.
