Unveil Maury Monument Here November 11—

Below is picture of the monument on Monument Avenue to She great Virginia navigator and scientist, Matthew Fontaine Maury, to be unveiled on Armistice Day afternoon. Military units which later will take part in the dedication of the new Richmond Stadium will participate in the Maury unveiling exercises. The bronze globe is now being installed on the base of the Maury monument.

Governor Will Deliver Address At Maury Exercises On Nov. 11

Governor Byrd will deliver the ad-l dress at exercises marking the Matthew Fontaine Maury Monument unveiling November 11 at 3 o’clock and Miss Mary Maury Fitzgerald, great-granddaughter of the famous scientist and oceanographer, will be sponsor.

Herbert W. Jackson, chairman of the Maury unveiling committee, announced yesterday.

The Maury ceremonies will precede the formal dedication of the new Richmond Stadium, and will be participated in by the largest number of military units parading in Richmond since the World War.

Commander George Cole Scott is the chief marshal arranging for the Maury unveiling ceremonies, assisted by a committee including Herbert W. Jackson, chairman of the Maury committee; Walter Scott, George Bryan, Gaston Lichtenstein and Gus M.

Schwarzschild.

Local Military Groups Participate.

The Blues, Howitzers, Grays and John Marshall High School, Cade will participate in the Maury cere-monies, and later the Richmond Stadium exercises, as will a detachment of Marines from the Quantico Barracks, and another detachment from Fortress Monroe. The Marine Band from Quantico also will be sent here for the occasion.

The Navy Department will be represented officially by Ernest Lee Jahncke, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Chairman Jackson announced yesterday.

Plans, for the Maury unveiling fit in with the American Legion program in connection with the Stadium dedication. The military and naval units will form and march to the Maury Monument, where exercises starting at 3 o’clock will consume less than one hour. At the conclusion of the Maury celebration, the entire unit will move on to the Stadium, where Colonel John A. Cutchins, chief marshal of the stadium exercises, will take charge of the ceremonies.

Bronze Globe Arrives.

The bronze globe which surmounts the Maury Monument has arrived here from the factory, and workmen are now installing it in place. The complete monument will be viewed for the first time by the public on the afternoon of November 11. The base of the monument, with a statue of Commander Maury In a sitting position, has been in position for several months, but has been boxed in, preserved from public gaze.

The monument designed by William F. Sievers, Richmond sculptor, cost $60,000.
