Governor Byrd will deliver the address on the occasion of the unveiling of the Matthew Fontaine Maury monument in this city on the afternoon of Armistice Day, according to an announcement made by Herbert W. Jackson, chairman of the committee in charge of the program.
The unveiling ceremonies are. to take place at 3 P.M. Nov. 11 and will precede the formal dedication of the new Richmond stadium. Major Mills F. Neal is general chairman of the arrangements being made by local posts of the American Legion for the. customary observance of Armistice Day here and his committee and the members of the legion in general have gladly co-ordinated their plans with those being made by the Maury monument committee for the dedication on that day of the memorial to the great Virginian and great scientist, Matthew Maury.
To March to Monument.
According to the plans announced, the various military, naval and civic units will form and march to the site of the Maury monument, at the intersection of Monument and Belmont avenues, where, at 3 o’clock, exercises, expected to consume about one hour, will be held. The entire parade will then move on to the stadium, where Colonel John A. Cutchins, chief marshal of the exercises there, will take charge of the ceremonies.
The Richmond Blues, the Howitzers, the Grays and the John Marshall High school Cadets will be among those taking part in both ceremonies and it is expected that a detachment of marines from Quantico, and possibly the hand from that post, will also, bet Richmond for the day.
Commander George Cole Scott has been selected by the Maury monument committee as chief marshal in charge of the ceremonies at the monument and he will be assisted by other members of the committee including Herbert W, Jackson, Walker Scott, George Bryan, Gaston. Lichtenstein and G. M. Schwarzschild. It had at first been expected that Secretary of the Navy. Charles Francis Adams would be in Richmond on Armistice Day and would deliver the unveiling address. However, Secretary Adams has found that he will not be able to be present and it is announced that the navy department will be represented by Ernest Lee Jahncke, assistant secretary.
