Governor Calls on Virginians to Aid in Erecting Maury Statue

Governor Davis yesterday issued the following proclamation relative to the observance of Matthew Fontaine Maury Day, February 1:

Whereas, by an act of the General Assembly of Virginia, approved, March 25, 1920, the Governor of Virginia is requested to designate a day to be known as Matthew Fontaine Maury Monument Day; and to call upon the people of Virginia to make such contributions as they may to aid in erecting a suitable monument to the memory of Maury and

Whereas, in accordance with law, the Superintendent of Public Instruction has directed that Matthew Fontaine Maury Monument Day, designated by the Governor of Virginia, be observed in all the public schools of the Commonwealth, and the pupils on this day be instructed concerning the life and achievements of this distinguished Virginian, and that they be urged to make such contributions to the Maury monument fund as they and their parents deem proper; and

Whereas, the Commonwealth of Virginia has by the act aforesaid appropriate the sum of $10,000 to be used for the purpose of erecting an appropriate memorial to Matthew Fontaine Maury; now

Therefore, I, Westmoreland Davis, Governor of Virginia do hereby designate Tuesday, February 1, 1921, as Matthew Fontaine Maury Monument Day, and I o call upon the people of Virginia for contributions to aid in erecting a suitable memorial to Matthew Fontaine Maury, as evidence of and as an expression of the esteem and pride in which his memory is held in his native State.

Given under my hand and under the Lesser Seal of the Commonwealth, this 25th day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twenty-one, and in the one hundred and forty-fifth year of the Commonwealth.
