REQUEST $10,000 OF CITY FOR MAURY MEMORIAL

Association Prefers Intersection of Monument Avenue and Roseneath Road as Site.

Discussing the present “drive” for funds to erect a memorial in Richmond to the “Pathfinder of the Seas,” Gaston Lichtenstein, corresponding secretary of the Matthew Fontaine Maury Association, yesterday called attention to certain errors which inadvertently appeared in a previous publication. Mr. Lichentestein’s statement follows:

“Today’s issue of The Times-Dispatch states that our organization is asking the city of Richmond for $5,000. As this error appeared last week also, in connection with a report of a meeting of the Finance Committee of the City Council, it seems advisable to give out officially that the Matthew Fountaine Maury Association has asked the city of Richmond to contribute one-fifth of the cost of the proposed memorial, particularly as it will be located here. This sum will amount to $10,000.

“Another matter which () in a public monument is the question of location. Although the measure before the Finance Committee calls for a site at the point where Franklin Street runs into Monument Avenue, two blocks east of the Boulevard, the Matthew Fountain Maury Association would prefer the intersection of Monument Avenue and Roseneath Road, in view of the fact that the city intends to widen the latter street to the proportions of a Boulevard. However, our organization prefers to the let the question of location be settled later.

“Next week’s contribution by the school children is of immediate importance. If the parents can be made to realize that Maury was a benefactor of the human race and that Virginia has saved millions of dollars through his efforts, the monument fund will soon reach the necessary sum.”
