Maury Praised at Ceremony As ‘Greatest Seer of His Time’
Ranking Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury with the greatest scientists of the ages, Professor J. T. Walker of the Richmond Professional Institute of William and Mary eulogized the “Path-finder of the Seas” at exercises held yesterday at the statue to the Virginian on Monument Avenue. The ceremony was held in honor of the 135th birthday of Maury.
Professor Walker cited the many scientific accomplishments of Commodore Maury and termed him the “greatest seer of his century.” In these troubled times, he said, “we must admire him for his pious life and the simplicity with which he faced life.
The Rev. A. E. Acey, pastor of Boulevard Methodist Church, delivered the invocation and benediction at the monument. The services were sponsored by Elliott Grays Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, of which Mrs. W. E. Kohlenstein is president, and were under the direction of Mrsfl Charles W. Schaadt, past president of the chapter and chairman of special programs.
Mrs. Littleton Fitzgerald Jr., granddaughter of Commodore Maury, was unable to attend the ceremony.
