MAURY BODY IS GRANTED CHARTER
Corporation Commission Authorizes Organization to Erect Monument.
The corporation commission today issued a charter of incorporation to the Matthew Fontaine Maury Association of Richmond, Va.
As stated in, the charter, the purpose for which this organization is created, is to perpetuate the name and fame of Matthew Fontaine Maury and to erect in Richmond a monument to his memory.
It is stated that the association thus formed will shortly enter into a contract with William F. Sievers, sculptor, of this city, to begin work on this monument.. A beautiful model has already been made by Mr. Sievers, a picture of which recently appeared in the pictorial supplement of the New York Times.
When erected this monument will he one of the handsomest in the South. Three years ago the Confederate veterans while in session in Richmond, laid the corner stone of the monument which will be erected on Monument avenue.
For ten years the Maury Association has been actively at work raising funds and the desired sum, namely $60,000, is nearly in sight. Patriotic citizens have cheerfully contributed to this cause and deemed it a privilege to do so. And it is hoped that others will voluntarily respond with contributions for the purpose of raising the necessary sum for the erection of this monument to one of the greatest of Virginia’s great men.
The following persons are named in the incorporation an trustees of the association, who will administer its affairs: Mrs. E. E. Mofitt, Mrs. Norman V. Randolph. Mrs., Beverly T. Crump, Miss Lucy Munford, Mrs. John H. Southall, Mrs. Mann S. Valentine, Mrs, Herbert W. Jackson, Gaston Lichten. stein. Walker Scott. George Bryan, G. M. Schwarzschild, T. C. Willams, Jr. John Stewart Bryan, Granyille G Valentine, G. M. Brydon, Stuart MeGuire, angus . Swink, Jonathan Bryan, Herbert W. Jackson.
