Memorial to Lee Up to City Officials

BALTIMORE, (AP)-A $78,000 fund willed by Mrs. Elizabeth B. White for erection of a statue of Robert E. Lee was ruled a bequest to the city yesterday by Judge William L. Henderson, who left determination of the type of memorial to city officials and the estate’s executor.

Robert Garrett, executor of his great-aunt’s estate, had petitioned for court sanction of use of the fund for development of a public recreation area.

His attorney told the court that the late J. Henry Ferguson had left $100,000 for a joint equestrian statue of Lee and Stonewall Jackson and that another statue of Lee would be superfluous.
