Lee, Jackson Statue Dedication To Be Held May 1 at Baltimore
BALTIMORE, April 22-(AP)- This city of monuments is planning a big show Saturday, May 1, to dedicate its most recent one-an equestrian bronze of Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
Governor Tuck, of Virginia, and Governor Lane, of Maryland, are going to participate, along with cadets from Virginia Military Institute and units of the Second Army and the Maryland National Guard.
The statue of the Confederate generals has been in place at Wyman Park, near the Municipal Art Gallery, since last October.
It commemorates the parting of Lee and Jackson on the eve of the battle of Chancellorsville on May 1, 1863. Jackson was shot by his own troops in the next day’s fighting.
Dr. Freeman to Speak
Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman, editor of The Richmond News Leader and famed biographer of General Lee, will make the principal address.
The ceremonies will start with a parade up Charles Street by the
340 VMI cadets, the VMI band, and the Army units.
Mayor O’Alesandro will accept the statue for the city and the committee on arrangements expects at least 5,000 to attend the ceremonies.
Baltimore reputedly has more statues and monuments per capita than any other city in the country. The new statue was provided for in a $100,000 gift given by the late
J. Henry Ferguson, a Baltimore banker.
It was executed by Laura Gardin Fraser, of Bridgeport, Conn.
