ROGER B. TANEY.-
The Springfield (Mass.) Republican says: “Roger B. Taney was one of the purest men that ever sat in the seat of John Marshall; upright, inflexible, fearless, as fanatic a devotee to duty as Mr. Sumner himself. Now that he is dead, we ought to be able to see the man himself behind his warped conscience, and hereditary prejudices, and perverse politics. It it is a purely political reason that still keeps bis bust out of the Supreme Courtroom, Republican statesmen should ask themselves whether this petty, posthumous vengeance is quite worthy of them or of the country.”
