Letters From Father Byrd

TO VIRGINIANS:

Dear Folks, —When Senator George H. Moses was asked to comment on the outcome of the Virginia election, he said “the Dutch have captured Holland.” This, perhaps, was the funniest remark made during a very funny campaign. But Senator Moses doesn’t possess the best sense of humor in the country. That is the distinction of the coalition leaders in Virginia, who put on the greatest vaudeville act we have ever seen.

Another Armistice Day has come and gone, and the old debate as to who won the war is still on. If you want to start the fight all over again, just suggest to an army man that the marines turned the trick. Anyway, it was won, and the greatest battle of them all was the Battle of Cognac. The American soldier was at his best in this in this conflict.

“The Bishop” essayed to sing of a couple of Democratic chieftains, and this was the result:

From Russell County Combs—

For patriotic reasons deserted both their homes.

“Upon this pair of babies

No blemishes I see—

If they are good enough for Harry Byrd,

They’re good enough for me.”

At last the statue of Matthew Fontaine Maury is in Its rightful place on Monument Avenue. The day was long delayed, but finally It came through the efforts of Mrs. E. E. Moffitt and our old friend, Gaston Lichtenstein, who occasionally comes to earth after delightful journeys through spirit land.

Jimmy Walker again is elected Mayor of New York. It the office seeks the man, it could not have gone very far in its search.
