MAURY MONUMENT WORK UNDER WAY

Granite for Base of $60,000 Project Here to Come From Stone Mountain.

Plans for the completion of the proposed monument here to Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury are progressing satisfactorily, it is today reported at the office of the Matthew Fontaine Maury Association in the Virginia Trust Company building.

The model for the monument, which is the work of William F. Sievers, of Richmond, was accepted some time ago, and Mr. Sievers is also in charge of the casting and placing of the bronze figure, The granite of which the hare of the monument will be constructed is to be gotten from Stone Mountain, near Atlanta, Ga.

The total cost of the monument, funds for which are already in hand. wIll be 360,000, it is said. Of this amount $30,000 was provided by appropriations from the state and city and from the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The balance was raised by popular subscription. The monument will be ready for unveiling next spring.

Because of his genius and his contributions to science, Commodore Maury has been called the “Sir Isaac Newton of the Seas.”. His knowledge of the winds and currents has made possible the present day work of the United Stater weather bureau.

Mrs. E. E. Moffitt, of Richmond, now 81 years old, has for ten year been president of the Maury Association and the work soon to be completed is largely due to her patriotism and untiring labor.
