HOLTON’S FALSE SECRET CIRCULAR.

There seems to be no limit -to the depths to which the Republican campaign managers resort, in their brazen and reckless disregard of the truth.

A correspondent sends us a copy of a secret circular bearing date of August 25th, signed A. E. Holton, Chairman of the Republican State Executive Committee, which contains the following paragraph:

“The News’ and Observer, in its issuer of August 18th and 19th, on its front pages, had cartoons representing James H. Young entering. in the night time, the bed-room of a white lady teacher in the white Deaf, Dumb and Blind Asylum. with vulgar suggestion and vicious comment.”

This is a false paragraph, prompted by impotent rage. No such cartoon ever appeared in the News and Observer. and the suggestion that anything that appeared in these columns had “vulgar suggestion and vicious comments” is as low and vile as it is infamous and false.

The cartoon that appeared in the News and Observer had no “comments,” except an explanation of article four of the by-laws, this by law requiring “the committee of inspection to visit each department of the institution twice every month and make a written report to the Board as to their condition.”

Not content with a false statement in his secret circular, Chairman Holton prints the garbled interview with Mr. John E. Ray. Superintendent of the institution. On the very day that Chairman Holton dates his circular the News and Observer contained an interview with Mr. John E. Ray in which he repudiated every material statement contained in the Progressive Farmer’s so-called interview. Instead of printing Mr.

Ray’s denial of the Progressive Farmer’s statements, Chairman Holton sends out a secret circular containing the repudiated interview. The secret circular is thus a falsehood from beginning to end.

The News and Observer stated that the law gave Jim Young, the negro politician, the power to inspect all the departments of the white blind asylum. Chairman Holton’s gang raised a cry about “a Democratic lie.”

When the by-laws were printed and they were cornered, they cried out that if this were true techically (sic), Jim Young had never been appointed on the Inspection Committee, and Mr. Ray was quoted as saying, “He never served on any committee of inspection of the white department.” Mr. Ray never said anything of the sort, though his memory was not good.

When this paper printed that Jim Young had been appointed on the inspection committee, then Holton’s gang cried out that Young “was appointed only to inspect the colored department.” Then when they began to lie so brazenly, there was printed the report, with the autograph signature of Jim Young, the negro politician, telling of an official inspection he had made of the white institution.

Did that fact have any effect upon Holton and his cohorts? Not a bit. They began to send out secret circulars full of falsehoods and repudiated interviews and to set up a cry of “Democratic lie” in order to hide the truth.

If Mr. Holton is an honest man and wants the people to know the truth he will issue at once another circular containing the official report signed by Jim Young and the interview with Mr. John E. Ray in which he gives the lie to every material statement published in the Progressive Farmer’s Interview which Holton circulated after its false statements had been publicly exposed. The people will soon see whether Holton will let the truth, even in long boots, follow the falsehoods he has sent out in a secret circular.

Facts are facts and will not down.

People who do not think a negro politician ought to control the white blind children will repudiate all politicians responsible for the State’s humiliation in thus putting the white blind institution in the hands of the negro politician.

The only chance to have white rule in white institutions is to vote for white supremacy. And you cannot get it except by voting against any and all men who affiliate with the negro party.

Jim Young’s inspection of the white blind institution is a natural result of negro rule such as now curses North Carolina. If the present regime is continued in power, this is but the entering wedge of fuller control of white institutions by negro politicians. And white men who believe in such control will not vote the ticket fixed up by Holton.
