The Monument to the Confederate Women of Maryland.
Editor “Answers”:
Does the figure on the monument to the Confederate Women of Maryland represent Miss Riley of Winchester, Va., and is she related to Brent Riley?
The sculptor, Mr. J. Maxwell Miller, informs us that the group on the monument to the Confederate Women of Maryland presents the heroism, devotion and self-sacrifice of all these women “In Difficulty and Danger”; the standing woman, their intense feeling and spirited determination to do all in their power to aid; the kneeling woman, their tenderness, devotion and sacrifice; the man, the men of the South or even the “Cause.” The group is treated as an incident rather than as an allegory but should be interpreted largely and not literally.
