TANEY STATUE.
A message was received from Mayor Latrobe in regard to the Taney statue, as follows:
“Since the close of the session of the late city council a gentleman has presented to the city of Baltimore, and has had erected in Mount Vernon Square, a statue in bronze, of heroic size, made by the late William Rinehart, of the late Roger B. Taney. of Maryland, chief justice of the United States. This statue of one of the great men of the country, this work or a Maryland sculptor, whose fame is world-wide, is not only an ornament and an honor to our city, but an evidenue of liberality on the part of a citizen who has already largely sided in giving Baltimore its reputation as a home for art. I respectfully suggest that your honorable body appoint a committee to prepare suitable resolutions expressing the appreciation by the mayor and city council of this gift to the city by Mr. William T. Walters.”
It was resolved that a joint committee of three members from each branch be appointed to carry out Mayor Latrobe’s wishes. and Messrs. Edwards, Keller and Fowler, of the first branch, and Messrs. Wiener, Sutherland and Rogers, of the second branch, appointed.
