THE MARYLAND CONFEDERATE MONUMENT.

THE SUN publishes today a picture of the design for the proposed monument to the Confederate soldiers and sailors of Maryland. The design is a striking and appro-printe one. The monument will be erected by the Maryland Daughters of the Confederacy. To them and to the Baltimoreans who have co-operated with them and lent generous assistance belongs the credit of this patriotic achievement. Maryland, while preparing to raise a monument to perpetuate the memory of the dead, has not neglected those Confederate soldiers who are in need of a helping hand. At Pikesville there is a Confederate home where old soldiers who followed Lee and Jackson are tenderly cared for. This is an institution of which the State is justly proud. It has made life worth living to many a gallant champion of the “Lost Cause”, who was not able, by reason of the infirmities of age and disease, to provide for his own needs. The design of the monument is all that could be desired. It is doubtful, however, whether the site chosen for the location of the monument is a suitable one. This is a matter to which the Daughters of the Confederacy and their friends and advisers should give serious consideration. The site selected for the monument, according to present arrangements, is near the Mount Royal entrance to Druid Hill Park. It is feared that the monument will be disfigured by smoke and cinders from the trains constantly passing in that vicinity. If these fears are well founded, a change in the location of the monument would seem to be advisable.
