The Rinehart Statue of Taney

The bronze statue of Chief Justice Taney, by Rinehart, which has been placed on the handsome pedestal erected for it in the north square of Mount Vernon Place, will be unveiled this afternoon at 3 o’clock. The unveiling will be done by & great-grandson of Chief Justice Taney, a lad nine years of age, Master Roger Brooke Taney Anderson, of this city. The Maryland Institute Schools of Design, with Prof. Fuchs, and the Charcoal Club of Baltimore artists will attend. Mr. Wm. T. Walters, to whose public-spirited liberality the city is indebted for this duplicate of the great work of Rinehart, the distinguished Maryland sculptor, says that if the ceremonies of the unveiling had been carried out as first proposed, it was the intention to announce the disposition that will be made of the fund left by Mr. Rinehart for the encouragement of art, which has now accumulated so as to produce $4,000 a sear. Mr. Walters is the trustee of this fund, and its disposal is being considered and will be announced in a few days. He says truly that “there bas been no Maryland artist who has reflected the credit upon this city and State that Rinehart has. The manner, too, in which he bequeathed his estate for the advancement of art commends him to all Marylanders. There ought to be no stint, and there will he none, in recognizing his genius as represented in this great work, and approval of the generous gift of his fortune.” The statue stands in the oval grass plat at the south end of the square, and it laces toward the south. A statue of Johns Hopkins, It is understood, will hereafter occupy the oval plat at the north front, and Mr. Walters is interesting himself in securing it. The duplicate statue of George Peabody by the sculptor Story, a gift from Mr. Robert Garrett, is on the way to this country, and will be placed in the east square, opposite the Peabody Institute.
