A Suburban Monument To A Lost Cause

Too far from the center of the city to grow stale for daily passers-by, this compact memorial to the Confederate Women of Maryland stands on University Parkway near Charles street. It was erected some twenty years ago from State and private funds, J. Maxwell Miller being the sculptor. The fallen soldier is being nursed by a woman somewhat older than the girl who stands erect and defiant, her spirit unbroken. Critics describe the massing as skillful and the lines as distinct, but they are not pleased with the use of red granite for the base, merely to match the base of the Confederate monument on Mount Royal avenue.
