DAUGHTERS ASKED TO AID

Confederate Veterans Want State Division To Help On Memorial.

GEN. TRIPPE MAKES APPEAL

Ladies At Annual Meeting Decide To Assist In Plan – Mrs. W. W. Preston Is Elected President.

An important feature of the yearly meeting of the State Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy yesterday at Lehmann’s Hall was the reading by Maj.-Gen. A. C. Trippe, commander of the Maryland Division of the United Confederate Veterans, of the following resolution passed by the veterans asking the co-operation of the Daughters in the plans for the erection of a monument to the Confederate women of Maryland:

“That this praiseworthy object, so long delayed, should have the immediate and earnest support of the Southern people of our State.

“Among the noble women of whom history tells that have gone about doing good none have a fairer or brighter record than the women of our city and State who were devoted to the Confederate cause. Intent in service, no matter how exacting, they went their way over the battle field and through the hospitals nursing the wounded soldier back to life or comforting him on his way to death with a zeal, a woman’s love and a steadfastness that no difficulty nor danger, nor requirements of self-sacrifice could daunt or discourage.

“Their names live in blessed memory all through our Southern land with the veterans for whose welfare they gave such labor and service. Let us now honor them in their home.

Resolved, That the United Confederate Veterans of Maryland heartily indorse the proposal to erect a monument in Baltimore to ‘our’ Confederate women and respectfully ask the co-operation of the Daughters of the Confederacy in Maryland.

“WILLIAM M. PEGRAM,
“Chairman;
“R. CURZON HOFFMAN,
“BARTLETT S. JOHNSTON,
“THOMAS P. GUSHAM,
“JOHN W. SCOTT.”

Mrs. D. Giraud Wright, the honorable president of the Maryland Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy, responded in behalf of the ladies and made a motion to accede to General Trippe’s request, to which the chapter enthusiastically agreed. Mrs. Wright was appointed chairman of the auxiliary committee on the monument to the Confederate women of Maryland, the others being Mrs. F. C. Odenheimer, first vice-president-general; Mrs. John P. Poe, president Baltimore Chapter; Mrs. Walter W. Preston, president Maryland Division; Mrs. Charles Marshall, first vice-president Baltimore Chapter; Mrs. Thomas B. Gresham, Mrs. William Reed, Mrs. E. S. Beall, Mrs. G. T. M. Gibson and Miss Cary.

At the election of State officers which followed, Mrs. Walter W. Preston, of Bel-air, was unanimously chosen to succeed Mrs. Odenheimer as president of the State division, the latter having been made an officer of the national society at the recent convention in Richmond.

The other offices were filled as follows:

Second Vice-President-Mrs. G. S. Norris, of Belair.
Third Vice-President-Mrs, Victor L. Baugh-man, of Frederick.
